The history of Mundels Furniture & Mattresses runs wide in deep in Western Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia.  Back in 1914 at the beginning of World War I, when it was difficult to start and keep a business going in a town dominated by the iron and steel industry, B.J. Mundel took his business to his customers as a door-to-door home goods company.  Among his offerings were blankets, toasters, mixers, draperies, area rugs and similar enhancements for the home. The business model worked well through two world wars as Mundel kept as many as 25 salespeople busy on the road at one time as well as a showroom on Main Street in Uniontown.  Then, in 1950, B.J. Mundel opened his store at the present-day 134 Connellsville Street location where the business continued to prosper for more than five decades.

In 1962, B.J.’s son, Alvin S. Mundel, became company president expanding the business further to include furniture, appliances and TV’s.  In 1970, the building was completely remodeled and doubled in size. In 1980, the door-to-door home goods company was phased out, the store showroom was again greatly expanded and additional parking added.  Mundel’s Furniture and Appliance Outlet was established in 1989 in downtown Uniontown.  The two stores were operated by Alvin and his sons Mark and Randy. Randy Mundel became president of the company in 2013.
